Fundamental Advanced Sailing Topics

Winter 2021-2022, Huguenot YC Jr Sailing is providing five Advanced Sailing and Seamanship Seminars – Thursday Evenings on a wide range of subjects, one day a month from December through April.

  • 2nd Thursday night each month from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm, December thru April
Where:
  • Huguenot Jr Sailing Room
Eligibility
  • open to all JS alumni and the 4.7 frostbite group.
Pricing:
  • 5 nights 
  • $100 for all five seminars, or $25 each individually
    Price includes materials, pizza and snacks.
    Pre-registration is required.

Each night will consist of a table top discussion, hands on practice, and a game related to each session.

Syllabus for Winter Sessions

What is Marlinspike Seamanship? – Bill Heintz and Laurent Bannon

Knot tying, splicing, whipping, coiling, and heaving a line.


Table Top Discussion:     

  • Knot tying and when to use different knots.
  • When to splice instead of tying a knot.
  • Different types of rope materials, advantages, drawbacks, and when to use each.
  • Methods of splicing 3-strand, 12-strand braided, and Double braid rope

Hands-on Activities:

  • Knot Tying, Splicing, Whipping, Coiling, and Heaving a line

Table Top Discussion:     

  • Reading a Marine Forecast - understanding and sources.
  • Tide Principles - understanding and sources.
  • Basic Navigation and Chart Plotting
  • Fileing a float plan.

Hands-on Activities:

  • Determine the weather forcast, tide and current for a particular day for a given location.

Required Supplies:

Care and Maintenance of your Sails and Boat – Tim Longo

Cleaning a boat.  How a boat is built, fiber glass, gelcoat. Taking care of your sails.


Table Top Discussion:     

  • How boats are built:  wood, fiberglass, gelcoat.
  • How to take care of our boat, how to clean.
  • How to make boat repairs.
  • How to maintain your sails in top racing condition.

Hands-on Activities:

  • Cleaning Tim's Laser.
  • Drying and Folding a sail instead of stuffing it into a bag wet.
