We offer a limited number of Opti & RS Feva sailboats for charter and will also help put you in touch with third parties offering private charters and local sales dealers. All privately owned and chartered boats must be checked-in and inspected before use. See links below for Check-In lists for each boat class.
FOR BEGINNERS: Sailors typically start in an Optimist dinghy, the largest youth sailing class globally. The "Opti” is safe, stable, and easy to rig. Each child will sail his or her own boat. Intermediate and advanced Opti sailors can compete in regattas at HYC and other yacht clubs if they wish. More details below.
FOR MORE ADVANCED SAILORS: We offer the Laser for single-handed sailing and the RS Feva as a two-person boat.
The Laser sailors must be 14 years old and weigh 110 lbs to compete in regattas. They can, however, start with a smaller sail. The Laser – an Olympic Class dinghy – is sailed by youths and adults and is one of the world's most popular sailboats.
The Feva – suitable for children 12 years and up – offers a mainsail, jib, and spinnaker. On the Feva, the kids will learn teamwork and multi-sail handling. It is a great training boat for sailors who will eventually move up to a 420 in college.
Older Sailors (14+ years old by the end of the calendar year) learn key safety skills by attending an off-site Safety at Sea class in Session 1 and have opportunities to sail on bigger boats and in regattas with our members.
*Optimal height more of a general guideline rather than a hard and fast rule. Other factors, such as age, weight, agility, and skill, will be more important.
